Cold Storage Building Construction Helical Piles

Intech recently helped supply micropiles for a partner constructing a cold storage facility. Read about the solutions we provided and why Intech should be your supplier of deep foundation systems.

Cold Storage Construction Details

A partner contacted Intech to supply square shaft SS5 helical piles to support a planned refrigerated storage building. The cold room floor details were designed to stock and store millions of pounds of product, and the underlying soil lacked the necessary stability.

Intech’s Solution

We supplied the client with square shaft SS5 helical piles which they installed under several rows of grade beams. This helped support the insulated commercial concrete floor for lift equipment.

Was the Client Satisfied?

The client was very satisfied with our contributions to the project. Our onsite professionalism and prompt delivery of the micropiles kept the project on schedule.

CHANCE Products Offered by Intech

CHANCE has been the international leader in deep foundation equipment since 1912. Intech sources equipment from CHANCE because its products are made in the United States, approved by all national building code agencies, and customizable for various projects.

Helical Piles

Helical piles are ideal for stabilizing foundation or increasing a soil’s load capacity; these deep foundation systems are independent of the structure and transfer load weight to bearing plates located in stable ground.

Helical Piles Installation Process

A certified installer excavates a hole at each anchor location that is wide and deep enough to place a bracket under the structure’s foundation. A rotary machine installs the anchor’s leading section, and extensions are added until the installer achieves the ideal depth and predetermined torque. Once the bracket is attached, the load is transferred to the anchor, stabilizing the building and allowing for lift.

Benefits of Helical Piles

Helical piles provide fast, predictable, and measurable results for installers. Other advantages include:

  • No heavy equipment required
  • Quickly installed
  • Lower costs
  • Limited excavation required

Helical Pulldown Micropiles

Helical pulldown micropiles were developed in 1997 specifically for areas with weak surface soils. They bring the advantages of pre-engineered helical piles to higher load applications and provide additional capacity compared to ungrouted helical piers.

Helical Pulldown Micropile Installation Process

Pulldown micropiles are installed by combining grout with either steel or a PVC casing. A helical anchor is drilled into the soil by applying torque; a lead displacement plate and extension are placed onto the shaft once installed. Torque is applied on the assembly to advance the piles, pulling the displacement plate downward and forcing the soil outward. This creates a cylindrical void around the shaft, which is filled immediately with grout. More extensions and plates are installed until the helical bearing plates achieve the minimum depth.

Benefits of Helical Pulldown Micropiles

More installers are starting to turn to pulldown micropiles because they are installed easily in any weather condition and provide predictable results. Other advantages include:

  • High capacity results
  • Cost effective
  • No pre-drilling required
  • Protects against corrosion in aggressive soils

CHANCE® DriveCast™ Friction Pile

Drivecast friction piles consist of centralized steel shafts and a patented displacement assembly system that allows the pile to rotate into the soil. Friction piles are designed for projects where increasing capacity is a top priority. They are a proven engineering solution that combines high-bearing capacity and side resistance to deliver predictable results.

Drivecast™ Friction Pile Installation

Friction piles are driven in the soil using a power-driven torque motor. Extensions are added to achieve the required depths, and sections are connected using coupling bolts. Grout is released from a gravity-fed reservoir until the minimum column length is reached.

Advantages of Drivecast™ Friction Pile

Drivecast Friction Piles are gaining popularity because they allow for permanent foundation installation in any location. Other benefits include:

  • Efficient and predictable capacity
  • Low mobilization costs
  • Minimal site disturbance
  • Easily installed in limited access areas
