Magnacore Self Drilling Anchors

Soil conditions can often make installation of conventional micropiles a challenge. Self-drilling anchors utilize a system of hollow bar injection-bore micropiles. Use of Intech Anchoring’s self-drilling anchor varies depending on the worksite, ground conditions, and size of the job. Project scope will determine which rig is appropriate for use. Voids, or the presence of underground water, are not suitable for self-drilling anchors.

Applications

Self-drilling hollow-bar anchors can be used in a variety applications. Use of the self-drilling anchor in new construction will create a strong foundation before building begins. If soil conditions under a building have changed or an original foundation is not strong enough, self-drilling anchors are used for underpinning and for building settlement and stabilization.

Self-drilling anchors offer an ideal, flexible solution for earth retention systems. When subterranean reinforcements give way, anchors can be used to resist lateral pressure. Anchors can be used to stabilize damaged and failing earth retention walls.

Benefits

The hollow bar design of the Magnacore Self-Drilling Anchors enables it to work in nearly every type of soil. In poor soil conditions where drilling open holes for a solid bar doesn’t work, a self-drilling anchor from Intech Anchoring will. The system was designed to allow the steel bar to be drilled and grouted into loose or collapsing ground. It is an economical solution when working in soil with boulders, various obstructions, or other limits to open-hole drilling.

Self-drilling anchors are easy to use and deliver minimal noise. This makes them ideal for working in urban areas and has led to its increase use and high installation rate. The system is designed to work well when a project has limited access. Operating the rig is easy and requires little labor costs.

The hollow bars inject grout while drilling and use sacrificial bits that are left in the ground after drilling and grouting is complete. Because the bits are used as a stabilizer in the hole, they serve two functions, thereby limiting material costs.

Sacrificial Bits

Self-drilling anchors use three types of sacrificial bits. The bits have varying holes that allow grout to flow out during the drilling process. The bits are designed for single use and are left in place once it reaches the right depth. The type of bit used varies by ground condition.

The first bit is the Tungsten Carbide Button Bit. This bit is ideal for hard rock, including limestone and shale. The second bit is the Tungsten Carbide Cross Cut Bit, which is designed for softer rock like sandstone, soft shale, or foundational rock that is already fractured. The third sacrificial bit is the Clay Bit, which his designed to drill through clay and mixed fills.
