Prepare Your Yard for a Spring Landscaping Project

Spring is finally here, and the first thing to do when the weather begins to warm is landscape your yard. Whether expanding an existing garden or planning new landscaping, here are a few things to consider:

  • Map out where power lines, water lines, roots, and other underground problems may be: Call the Digger’s Hotline and your local power company before you dig so they can mark where your underground services are located, such as gas and electric.
  • Consider the current plant life in your yard: Remove weeds, clearing the way for desired plants. Weeds will steal water and nutrients from other plants and eventually crowd them out. Give your new plants a healthy chance and eliminate weeds.
  • Remove diseased plants: Plants in your landscape that are diseased or dying, should be immediately removed down to the root, so they do not infect surrounding plant life. Signs of disease include mottled or discolored patches on the leaves, red or white webs around the stems, or a lackluster green color.
  • Evaluate the current layout of your yard: You may need to move or get rid of trees, bushes, or other plant life that can interfere with the new design.
  • Assess any hardscape features in the yard: If your current landscape has retaining walls, decks and other concrete structures, or paved walkways, be sure to inspect them for safety concerns. Make sure the retaining walls aren’t bulging and check for any cracks or tripping hazards within your walkways.
  • Look at the plants you’ve chosen for the garden: Consider whether or not they’re in season, if they will grow too big for the space given, and if they complement each other. Consult your local extension office or ask the personnel at the greenhouse for advice. They are knowledgeable when it comes to landscaping and are usually eager to help.

Protect Your Yard and Home from Water Damage

In order for your new landscaping to thrive, it must be properly drained. Without proper drainage, water will pool in areas and can lead to plant root rot. Intech Anchoring Systems can prepare your yard so that you can enjoy your backyard haven without worry.

To prevent drainage problems, Intech Anchoring Systems recommends installing a drainage system. Intech Anchoring Systems Hydraway Drainage System will properly control the water levels in your yard so it does not saturate plants. Proper drainage will also prevent retaining walls from exposure to excessive amounts of water, which can lead to cracks. Installation is easy and will last for many years.

If you have retaining walls and they are not holding up, they must be reinforced with helical anchors. These anchors look like long screws and are implanted deep in the soil before being attached to damaged walls. Because inactive soil is highly stable, it allows the anchors to correct current damage and prevent the walls from deterioration.
