The Problem

The soil capacity beneath a communications tower was shifting, and the structure needed reinforcing. A partner reached out to Intech Anchoring Systems to engineer a solution.

The Challenges We Encountered

One of the biggest challenges was that the contractor was inexperienced with reinforcing towers. The tower’s location was in a limited access area, and the significant amounts of electrical equipment made for a difficult project.

The Solution

Intech’s expert engineers decided that the following solutions were best for the project:

Magnacore Self-Drilling Anchors

Magnacore anchors are bolting solutions for unstable ground conditions. Ideal for projects with ground issues, they’re designed for optimized installation and tailored to the project’s specific needs.

Rock Drill

The rock drills offered by Intech feature a patented component that allows full percussion power once the drill string is engaged.

Grout Plant

Our grout plants provide high-volume production and continuous mixing for maximum efficiency. We also trained the contractor on these solutions through our Hollow Bar School, which provides hands-on learning for various applications to enhance real-world practices.

The Results

Intech assisted with equipment rental, engineering services, and material delivery to reinforce the communication tower successfully. The contractor was impressed by our training services and our frequent communication both during and after installation.

Magnacore Self-Drilling Anchors (SDAs) FAQ

What Are SDAs?

SDAs are ideal bolting solutions for poor ground conditions, such as gravel, silt, and clays. They should be considered the primary solution for projects.

What Are the Applications of SDAs?

Slope Stabilization

SDAs are most commonly used to stabilize soil formation. Contractors favor SDAs for weathered ground conditions because they offer a fast and straightforward installation process.

Foundations With Micropiles

SDA micropiles are composed of injected grout with an anchor rod as a steel reinforcement. They’re installed in sites with limited space using light drilling equipment and are suitable for tension and compression loads.

Tunneling

SDAs are economical for reinforcing tunnel circumferences and providing advanced roof support for tunnel excavation in overburdened rock conditions.

What Benefits Do SDAs Offer?

SDAs offer contractors the following benefits:

  • Decreased labor and material costs
  • Can be installed in difficult soil and limited access areas
  • Feature a high installation rate

What Are the Components of SDAs?

The SDAs offered by Intech are made from the following items:

Hollow Anchor Rods

The anchor rods feature a hollow interior for flushing, simultaneous drilling, and grouting. They’re manufactured from API standard thick wall steel tubing and cold rolled to a standard rope thread profile. By rolling the anchor rods, the crystalline structure of the steel is refined, which leads to increased yield stretch and a more durable drill rod. The anchor rod’s standard rope thread produces an excellent bond between the rod and grout and enables a better connection to the drilling rigs.

Extension Couplings

With a patented design that allows for direct end-to-end energy transmission, the extension coupling reduces losses and maximizes energy performance at the drill bit. All bars are precisely chamfered, which allows the bar ends to have direct contact.

Bearing Plates

The bearing plates are forged to steel plates and feature a center hole, which allows for seven degrees of articulation in all directions.

Hexagonal Nuts

Hexagonal nuts are manufactured using high-precision steel with chamfered edges on both ends and tempered to meet the strictest demands of anchor specifications for daily use. All nuts provided by Intech exceed the highest standards for strength.

Galvanized Anchors

Intech uses analytic evaluations to develop a hot-dip galvanizing corrosion protection anchor that limits the corrosive process. Our full range of SDAs and accessories are available with corrosion protection.

Coupling Boxes

Coupling boxes are ideal for high-wear locations because they’re made from thick-wall steel that’s machine and case hardened. Installers apply a locking torque to the permanent joints of the coupling box to avoid release when anchor bars are added.

Shanks

Rotary percussion with a hydraulic or air hammer is the preferred installation method. Intech provides a full range of shank adapters for different hammers.

Grout Coupling

Grouting is done after using standard flushing materials by connecting the grouting hose from the pump to the anchor bar, and is removed once the process is complete.

What Other Magnacore Products Does Intech Supply?

Soil Retention Tieback Anchors

Soil retention tieback anchors are horizontal rods that reinforce retaining walls for stability. The anchor offers sufficient resistance by securing one end to the wall and anchoring the other end into the soil. Tieback anchors save time and money because of their efficient installation process. They can extend to any length in soil, and are ideal applications for:

  • Reinforcing retaining walls
  • Areas of limited access
  • Stabilizing slopes and structures
